Simon Lake’s Explorer, Milford, Connecticut:
Inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, engineer Simon Lake invented various submarines as far back as 1894. The US Navy was uninterested in Lake’s designs at first, so instead, he sold subs to Imperial Russia, Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During WWI the Navy changed course and bought 26 subs from Lake’s company based in Milford.
