Shipyard Falls

Shipyard Falls, East Hampton, Connecticut:

This little-known waterfall isn’t marked on most maps. Its water source is from Mine Brook. Shipyard Falls spouts from a partial dam that drops 20 feet below.

According to a local blog called Waterfalls of Connecticut, “Shipyard Falls was once at the heart of a bustling village that leveraged its docks on the Connecticut River to move freight and construct boats. Round-the-clock maritime traffic on the river ceased with the advent of the railroads, leaving these falls to murmur away in the quiet woods of a now-sleepy hamlet.”

Directions: From CT 9 in Middletown, take exit 16 and follow signs to CT 17 north and CT 66 east. Follow CT 17 north and CT 66 east as the state highway crosses the Connecticut River. Continue along CT 66 east as CT 17 north turns left in Portland and in a few miles you you reach the junction of CT 66 and CT 151 in the section of East Hampton known as Middle Haddam. Take a right onto CT 151 south. Follow CT 151 south for 0.6 mile and turn right onto Shipyard Rd. Drive 0.2 mile on Shipyard Rd and the falls will be visible on your left about 150 feet upstream of the road bridge that crosses Mine Brook. There is a small pull-off on the left just before the bridge to park.
