Housatonic Overlook, Orange, Connecticut:
Housatonic Overlook offers a scenic hiking experience with five looping trails that lead to a stunning view of the Housatonic River. From this vantage point, onlookers can take in the sight of Two Mile Island, the Town of Shelton on the opposite bank, and the City of Derby to the north. Housatonic Overlook is adorned with a dedicated bench honoring the late preservationist, Dr. Edmund Tucker, former President of the Orange Land Trust. The area is now known as Tucker’s Ridge in tribute to his legacy.
These relatively flat trails have been walked by locals for hundreds of years. According to the Town of Orange an Algonquian people named the Paugussett lived along the Housatonic River. Part of the easternmost trail travels along an old stagecoach highway. The site was acquired by the Town of Orange in 2001 as part a state grant program. Tucker’s Ridge has been a popular place to spot bald eagles as well as Connecticut’s state flower, the Mountain Laurel. During snow season an abundance of animal tracks can be found underfoot.
