Union Station, Hartford, Connecticut:

Since 1889, Hartford’s main railroad passenger depot has been Union Station. Master architect Henry Hobson Richardson designed the rail hub in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The building occupies an entire downtown block adjacent to Bushnell Park. At the time of its construction, Union Station was the largest and most expensive transportation node in the state.

The station first serviced the Hartford and New Haven Railroad, Central New England Railway, Hartford and Connecticut Valley Railroad – all of which later merged under the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. In 1914, a devastating fire destroyed most of the building. The entire structure, made mostly of brick and brownstone, had to be rebuilt.

The National Register of Historic Places added “Hartford Union Station” to its prestigious list in 1975.
