Did you know? The Derby Center was originally called Birmingham. The town was settled in 1834 by Sheldon Smith and Anson G. Phelps and was first known as Smithville until it was renamed Birmingham in 1836, after the industrial city in England. Birmingham was chartered as a borough in 1851 and became part of the city of Derby when it was incorporated in 1894.
